Mezcal Noble Coyote Earns Top Honors at the 8th Annual New York World Wine & Spirits Competition
Mezcal Noble Coyote’s Capon Espadín wins Double Gold, Best in Show for Un-Aged White Spirits and Best Mezcal
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Atlantic Beach, FL, September 10, 2018:
Oaxaca-based Yowipe, SA de CV, distiller of Mezcal Noble Coyote, has been awarded the Double Gold Medal for its Noble Coyote Capon Espadín at the 8th Annual World Wine and Spirits Competition in New York. This premium mezcal also received the awards of “Best in Show for Un-Aged White Spirits” and “Best Mezcal.”
The 8th Annual New York World Wine & Spirits Competition was a highly-competitive competition featuring more than 340 spirits. Each entrant was evaluated by nine judges. Winners of Double Gold medals moved on to the second day of the event to compete for titles of Best in Class and Best in Show.
Noble Coyote Capon Espadín is the masterpiece of Maestro Mezcalero Eleazar Brena and is sustainably produced in the village of San Luis Amatlán in Oaxaca, Mexico—the cradle of fine mezcal. Noble Coyote Capon Espadín is produced using meticulously selected mother agave that are mature and are flowering as indicated by the growth of a “quiote” or flowering stalk. A large amount of energy is required to grow the quiote. At the optimal time, the quiote is cut and the agave is said to be “capado” or “castrated.” As a result, the sugar that would have been used to grow the flower is concentrated instead in the piña. The concentrated sugars give the Noble Coyote Capón Espadín a sweeter and more complex flavor than a typical Espadín and impart hints of floral and fruit notes. It is from this aspect of the production, the name “Capón” was derived.
Bernardo Sada, General Manager of Yowipe, commented: “Lead mezcalero and fellow owner of Yowipe, Eleazar Brena, and I are very proud of the honors bestowed upon our Noble Coyote Capon Espadín at this year’s New York World Spirts Competition. Bringing home the awards for Best in Show and Best Mezcal fuels our passion to share our authentic sustainably-produced mezcals with the world. These honors are not only a reflection of Eleazar’s skills as a mezcalero but are a testament to the traditions for making mezcal that have been passed down to him through six generations of mezcaleros.”
